If you're looking for a reasonably compact breeder that produces villagers at a more modest rate (about 1 every 2-3 minutes), check out the world map that contains the design I intend to use in my 1.9 world. Ray of Rays Works recently showed a lag-free villager breeder, in which pairs of breeding villagers are compacted into a relatively small space. This video discusses some possible tweaks to the design, in order to further compact villagers. Also included is a novel double-pass water stream. Recorded using Minecraft snapshot 15w50a. Note that my testing was restricted to the most recent 1.9 snapshot. There may be undiscovered idiosyncrasies if the design showed here is back ported to 1.8.
